Getting started
What macOS versions are supported?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The app uses Apple Vision framework and ScreenCaptureKit APIs introduced in macOS 14.
Does it work on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs?
Yes. Drink or Drown runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel.
Why does it need Screen Recording permission?
Drink or Drown uses ScreenCaptureKit to render your live desktop behind the water shader. Without it, the flood shows a blank background instead of your actual screen. The captured frames stay in GPU memory for rendering only and are never saved or transmitted.
How do I pause reminders?
Click the menu bar icon and toggle the pause button. Reminders resume automatically at the start of your next active hours, or when you unpause manually.
Camera and detection
The water won't drain when I drink. What's wrong?
Camera detection in Hardcore mode is friction, not proof. It works well in clean conditions: clear lighting, a standard glass or mug, and your face pointing roughly at the camera.
These things reduce accuracy: facial hair, glasses, dark mugs, Stanley cups, coconuts, strong backlighting, and unusual head angles.
If it doesn't catch you, tap "I drank." That always works. The point of camera detection is to make skipping slightly harder, not to catch you cheating.
Why does the camera turn on?
Only in Hardcore mode, and only while a reminder is actively firing. It lets the app detect that you've actually drunk something before draining the water. At no other time is the camera active.
Is my camera footage stored or uploaded?
No. Frames are processed by Apple's Vision framework entirely on your Mac and immediately discarded. Nothing is written to disk and nothing is sent over a network connection. There are no servers that handle camera data.
Can I use Hardcore mode without the camera?
If you pick Hardcore during setup and deny camera permission, the app automatically falls back to Standard mode. You can also switch modes at any time from Settings.
Privacy
Does the app collect any data?
No. There are no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporters, and no third-party SDKs that transmit data. Your settings live in macOS UserDefaults on your Mac only. See the full privacy policy for details.
Billing
Is there a subscription or free trial?
No. Drink or Drown is a one-time purchase at $7.99. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no trial. You pay once and own it permanently.
How do I uninstall?
Quit the app from the menu bar icon, then drag Drink or Drown from your Applications folder to the Trash. Your UserDefaults preferences will be cleaned up automatically by macOS.
